Come take a little tour of what a “day off” looks like around here… because it’s never actually off. 🐾

First stop: loading up five cats for their spay/neuter and vaccines, plus one Frenchie heading in for her spay and shots. Then it’s a two‑hour drive to the closest affordable spot I could even get an appointment for on my day off — because when you’re a nonprofit, you go wherever the price is lowest and the care is good.

While I’m sitting here, the behind‑the‑scenes chaos keeps rolling. I’m making more vet appointments, running the rescue from my phone, updating lists, ordering supplies, buying feed, catching up on social media, and trying to give the website the attention it never gets. 📱💻

Next stop on the tour: two active cat colonies I’m working on — planning, coordinating, trapping, and making sure every single one gets what they need. And in the background of all that, I’m gearing up for court next week, preparing for every possible outcome because rescue work doesn’t just happen in barns and backyards… sometimes it happens in courtrooms too. 🐱⚖️

And because life doesn’t pause, I’m also prepping for upcoming Beer Burro events as wedding season creeps in — making sure our long‑eared crew is ready to charm their way through another year of “I do’s.” 🍺🐴💍

Then there’s the volunteer day I’m organizing… the one I won’t even be at because I’ll be working. My husband and daughter will be stepping into my spot to keep everything running. It really does take a whole family to keep this place moving. ❤️‍🔥

And before the day ends, I still have to swing by and grab hay before they close — because the animals don’t care what time it is, they just know when dinner shows up. 🌾⏰

Another amazing happy ending for our girl Angelica — now Ivy Jane 🐾

Her beginning wasn’t easy.
Her mom, Soraya, gave birth to her in a car at an auto body shop 🚗, doing what moms do — surviving however they can.

But Ivy Jane didn’t grow up alone.
She was raised by her adoptive mom, Scribbles — the same Scribbles who’s Boots’ mom, our swimmers kitty who fought her way into the world with pure stubbornness and a whole lot of heart 💪🐱.
This little family has resilience in their DNA.

And somewhere along the way, my path shifted too.
When I started this rescue, it was almost entirely farm animals — pigs, goats, donkeys, ponies, poultry, and the small animals people tend to overlook 🐐🐓🐴.
Cats weren’t the plan.
But the more I learned about the crisis we’re facing, the more I realized I couldn’t ignore it.
So I adapted, shifted, and made room for the kitties who needed someone to show up for them ❤️‍🩹.

I’m not making the massive dents that the rescues I admire do.
But I am making a tiny difference — one cat, one story, one happy ending at a time.
And soon, with The Cat House opening in Downtown Sebring, I’m hoping that tiny difference grows into something bigger — more awareness, more adoptions, more lives changed 🏡✨.

Today, that happy ending belongs to Ivy Jane.

• We need building materials to put up temporary holding pens 🛠️
• This intake involves a large amount of pigs (potbelly mixes) 🐷 and a large amount of goats (mostly Nigerian mixes) 🐐
• This is short‑term housing only — we are NOT looking for fosters
• We’re seeking permanent placement through rescues and sanctuaries

Cudabears Lair spent the day at Love Life Animal Rescue & Sanctuary for a volunteer workday, joined by the crew from FARA and a powerhouse group of volunteers. We got dirty, got things done, and had an all‑around successful day helping another rescue push their mission forward.

Today’s run was from Highlands County Animal Services to Pork Butt Pastures, chauffeuring Monster the Meishan — a pig with the confidence of a heavyweight champ and the snout of someone who absolutely knows he’s the main character. He strutted onto that trailer like it was a red carpet and supervised the entire ride with peak Meishan attitude.

Highlight of the day: catching up with Waddles, the ASPCA celebrity pig himself. He looks incredible — healthy, happy, and thriving. Exactly what rescue work is supposed to look like.

If you know us, you know we don’t take dogs. No kennels, no setup, and historically… if they show up here, they don’t leave. But this time I had to break my own rule.

She was found in rough conditions. Not the worst I’ve ever walked into, but close enough that pretending it wasn’t my problem wasn’t an option. So here we are: new year, same chaos, same commitment to stepping in when it actually matters.

She’s safe now. Warm, fed, cleaned up, and finally able to breathe without fear. Vetting will come next — right now she just needs stability and a soft place to land.

She’s not up for adoption at this time. We’ll see where her journey goes once she’s settled and we know what she needs.

Three rabbits made it safely from Arcadia, Florida to the Maryland/Virginia line over a three‑day trip, and I’m grateful their former owners trusted me to handle such a sensitive transport. Rabbit travel can be stressful, so keeping them calm, cool, and comfortable was the priority the entire way.

For anyone who doesn’t know — we do offer animal transports when our schedule allows. It’s not a big money-maker, but every bit earned goes right back into supporting the animals at Cudabears Lair.

We moved 14 goats to Greenville, Florida 🐐 and helped two pigs, a mother and daughter originally from @aguacatesanctuaryandrescue in Miami, make their way to Alachua to reunite with Ocean’s brother 🐖💛

Ocean did make it to Tampa for her spay, but after surgery she pulled a full escape‑artist move and slipped out of her enclosure at the boarder’s house 😅 Meanwhile her daughter, Skyy, stayed safely at Cudabears Lair for a few days while we regrouped and figured out the next steps.

It wasn’t the simple transport we planned, but Monday they finally got their much‑needed happy ending — safe, settled, and right where they belong 🏡✨

Almost 11 years ago, before Cudabears Lair was a rescue… it was just us, some land, and a neighbor asking if we could help a group of animals who’d been abandoned after renters moved out. Months alone on that property. No food. No care. Just waiting.

Frank and his brother were part of that group—along with a bunch of ducks and chickens. We didn’t know it then, but saying “yes” to them would change everything.

Frank is about 16 years old now, and he’s the reason this sanctuary exists. He’s the reason we opened our gates to the forgotten, the misunderstood, and the ones left behind. He’s the reminder that one rescue can turn into a mission.

He’s still here, still stubborn, still opinionated, and still the heart of this place.

Valerie reminds us that every step we’ve taken—whether through #AnimalSanctuary care, #FlockFamily love, or #AnimalAdvocacy outreach—has always been about keeping the mission alive. 💛

Our swimmers-legs baby girl—yes, girl (we mis-gendered her for months, oops!)—has officially landed in the arms of a family who already loves her more than words can express.

From her wobbly start to her strong finish, Boots reminded us what resilience looks like. She didn’t ask for the rough beginning, but she handled it with grace, determination, and a whole lot of charm. And now? She’s exactly where she’s meant to be.

Volunteer Program Update: Paused Until the New Year

We want to thank everyone who’s expressed interest in volunteering at Cudabears Lair Animal Sanctuary. Your support means the world to us. At this time, we are not taking on any new volunteers and will be restarting the program after the first of the year.

This pause allows us to focus on a critical infrastructure project—building an outdoor bathroom to better support future volunteers and sanctuary operations. It also gives us space to reflect and reset.

While many come with genuine hearts, we’ve also had some sign up under the guise of volunteering, only to seek private tours and never return. It’s deeply disappointing and disheartening. This sanctuary is not a public facility—it’s my private home. My children live here. Every animal here is part of our family. Their safety, peace, and dignity come first.

Our time is precious and stretched thin. Every hour spent coordinating, cleaning, feeding, and rescuing is vital to the wellbeing of the animals in our care. We ask that anyone reaching out does so with genuine intent and respect for the work being done behind the scenes.

🛑 Why We’re Not Open to the Public:
- This is a private residence, not a commercial facility
- We must protect the privacy and safety of our family and neighbors
- We are liable for every person who steps onto the property
- Our focus is on rescue, rehabilitation, and responsible outreach—not tourism

We don’t mind sharing the joy of meeting our animals with those who truly show up to help—but the dishonesty has taken a toll. When the program resumes, there will be an application process and background checks before anyone steps foot on the property. This isn’t about being harsh—it’s about protecting what matters most.

In the meantime, we are still collecting names of potential volunteers. If you’re genuinely interested in helping and would like to be added to our email list for updates, please contact me privately.

Thank you for understanding, and for respecting the sanctuary, our animals, and our family.
